The Energeō of the Holy Spirit

When we talk about the Holy Spirit, we often think of comfort, guidance, or conviction. But the New Testament also describes the Spirit as the source of God’s active power—His energeō—working in and through believers. In Ephesians 3:16, Paul prays that God would “strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being.” This isn’t just encouragement; it’s a promise that the Holy Spirit is actively energizing our hearts for real transformation.

The Holy Spirit’s energeō doesn’t just help us do good things; it changes who we are. Galatians 5:22-23 lists the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These aren’t qualities we can manufacture on our own. Instead, as we yield to the Spirit, His energy works within us, producing a new character that reflects Christ.

The Spirit’s energeō also equips us for service. In Acts 1:8, Jesus promises, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses.” The early church experienced this firsthand. Ordinary people, filled with the Spirit, spoke boldly, performed miracles, and shared the gospel across the world. Their effectiveness wasn’t due to their own abilities, but to the Spirit’s energy working through them.

How do we experience the Holy Spirit’s energeō today? It starts with daily dependence. Romans 8:11 reminds us, “If the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He… will also give life to your mortal bodies because of His Spirit who lives in you.” As we pray, read Scripture, and obey God’s leading, we make room for the Spirit’s energy to renew and empower us.

The Holy Spirit’s energeō is not a distant force but a present reality for every believer. He transforms our hearts, empowers our service, and gives us strength for each day. As we walk with Him, we discover a new kind of energy—one that brings life, hope, and lasting change.
