When Spiritual Energy Goes Wrong: The Dark Side of Energeō

Not All Energy Is Good

It might surprise you, but the Bible uses energeō not only for God’s power but also for negative spiritual forces. Ephesians 2:2 describes life before Christ as being under the influence of “the spirit who is now at work (energeō) in those who are disobedient.” There’s a real spiritual battle happening, and not all spiritual energy comes from God.

The Enemy’s Counterfeit

2 Thessalonians 2:9 warns about the coming of the lawless one “in accordance with how Satan works (energeō),” using false signs and wonders. The enemy tries to mimic God’s power, but his energy leads to confusion, deception, and destruction. In James 3:15, we’re told that “such ‘wisdom’ does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.” Not every spiritual experience or burst of energy is from God.

Discernment Is Key

That’s why 1 John 4:1 urges us, “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.” We need to be wise and discerning, making sure the spiritual works or energy we’re following lines up with God’s truth. Galatians 5:19-21 lists the “acts of the flesh,” which are energized by something other than God and lead to brokenness.

Staying Rooted in Christ

The best way to avoid counterfeit energy is to stay close to Jesus. When we know His voice and His ways, we can spot the fake and cling to what’s real. Romans 12:2 encourages us, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” God’s energy brings life and peace, while the enemy’s energy brings chaos.

Not all spiritual energy is good. By staying rooted in Christ and testing what energizes us, we can avoid the pitfalls of counterfeit spiritual power and walk in the true energy that comes from God alone.
